Running Your First Team Meeting

Hold this before or right after your first training session. It sets the tone for the entire season.

Share a little about yourself โ€” why you're coaching, your soccer background (or lack of it!), and your goals for the season. Parents appreciate knowing who is responsible for their child.

Keep it warm and brief โ€” 2-3 minutes max. The goal is to feel human and approachable, not to impress anyone.

Cover these key points with parents at the first meeting to prevent 90% of issues later in the season:

  • Playing time โ€” everyone plays at least half of every game (AYSO rule)
  • Positions โ€” players will rotate, no child "owns" a spot
  • The 24-hour rule โ€” any concerns are discussed the following day, not immediately after a game
  • Sideline behavior โ€” cheer positively, no shouting at refs or opposing players
  • Pets โ€” AYSO policy prohibits animals at fields for games or training

Give parents a clear overview of:

  • Training days, times, and field location
  • Game dates (from GameChanger)
  • Key dates: banner deadline, team sponsor deadline, fall break
  • Weather cancellation process (John or Kathy will contact you + check ayso206.org)

Ask for volunteers at the first meeting:

  • Assistant Coach โ€” helps run training and covers when you can't make it
  • Team Parent โ€” handles snack schedules, banner coordination, and parent communication
  • Sponsor contact โ€” reach out to local businesses for team sponsorship

Most parents are willing to help if asked directly and given a specific role.

  • Hand out soccer balls and ask players/parents to mark with name and phone number
  • Hold uniforms until you've confirmed roster accuracy with the registrar
  • Confirm every player has shin guards and appropriate footwear

Field Sign-Up Rules

1

Selection Order

Board members go first, then coaches of multiple teams, then by division and number. Wait for your turn.

2

Sign Your Slot

Write your last name and division in pencil only โ€” e.g. "Smith 10UG". Most fields have multiple teams at the same time.

3

Photograph It

Take a picture of the sign-up sheet so you remember your time and location. Field maps are at ayso206.org.

Weather Cancellations: Pima County / Town of Marana decide on field closures. John or Kathy will text you AND it will be posted at ayso206.org. If in doubt, check the site first.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Heat Policy

Download the Zelus WBGT app (free, App Store & Play Store). Check it before every session. The app's guidance is your call โ€” as coach, weather safety is your responsibility.
